ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

Arbutin is a glucoside compound of hydroquinone of plant origin found in various plants, such as pears, blackberries, and blueberries. It has two isomers, alpha (4-hydroxyphenyl α-D-glucopyranoside) and beta (4-hydroxyphenyl β-D-glucopyranoside), where only the beta isomer occurs naturally in plants, with the alpha isomer being synthesized by microorganism enzymes. Both isomers have skin-whitening effects, but the alpha form of the compound is about 10 times more efficient due to its higher affinity for the active site of action in the skin, tyrosinase, which is why it is used in the formulation of NV ALPHA ARBUTIN.

The mechanism of action of alpha arbutin is through the inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for the production and regulation of melanin in the skin, similar to the action of hydroquinone but without toxicity. This suggests that the size of the molecule and the electrostatic action of the aromatic ring strongly influence the functioning of tyrosinase, which is inhibited by having its transcriptase affected. Other mechanisms of alpha-arbutin in the regulation of melanin include antioxidant activity, acceleration of epidermal renewal, and anti-inflammatory action. The regulation of melanin also helps in the treatment of melasma.

The European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) confirms that α-arbutin is safe and effective as a skin lightening agent, with no cytotoxicity and causing considerably less irritation and melanotoxicity than one of the most famous lightening agents, hydroquinone. In addition to its lightening properties, α-arbutin brings other benefits such as reducing tanning without increasing skin sensitivity after sun exposure and helping to correct glycation, skin pallor and loss of elasticity. However, despite all the benefits it brings, α-arbutin is highly hydrophilic, which considerably compromises its permeability in the skin and it also needs to be formulated at low temperatures due to its heat instability, reducing its effectiveness and ease of production. A useful strategy to overcome these deficiencies of α-arbutin is its nanoencapsulation, improving its stability, bioavailability and even increasing its lightening effect. Therefore, NV ALPHA ARBUTIN is the ideal solution in the search for lightening agents, bringing various benefits to the skin and the effectiveness and stability provided by NANOVETORES nanotechnology.
